Game Jargon Definition: "Dexterity Game"

Dexterity Game (noun) – dex·ter·i·ty game /dekˈsterədē ɡām/

A dexterity game emphasizes players using their manual dexterity or hand-eye-coordination. At their core, these games are all about using hands (or other body parts) to accomplish tasks. Depending on the game, these tasks may include stacking pieces on top of each other (Men at Work, 2019), flicking tokens towards a target (Crokinole, 1876; Flick 'em Up!, 2015), or carefully removing elements from a larger structure (Jenga, 1983). Traditionally, there are a few fundamental characteristics that set dexterity games apart from most other tabletop games. Most notably, dexterity games rely far less on strategy or long-term planning as a path to victory. Rather than rewarding players for outthinking one another, they capitalize on players using their motor skills and ability to stay calm and physically focused while under pressure (Shoot the Moon, 1959). Some modern dexterity games combine traditional dexterity game elements with other tabletop game elements, such as cards that use game mechanics to augment players’ physical skills (Catacombs: Third Edition, 2015).
